Case Study – Dr. Martens

Background:

Dr. Martens is an iconic global brand and one of the most recognised footwear brands in the world, selling in excess of 14 million pairs of footwear annually in more than 60 countries. Dr. Martens culture is rooted in an approach of “doing the right thing” and in January 2021, when the company listed on the London Stock exchange a number of shareholders made significant donations to a newly created Dr. Martens Foundation.

Brief:

As experts in the world of Foundations, Giving is Good were selected to create a vision, strategy and programme for the newly formed Foundation. The objectives of the Foundation were threefold. Firstly, to deliver genuine lasting societal impact. Secondly, to build reputation and alignment with the brand and values of Dr. Martens. Thirdly, to create a compelling programme that would engage, inspire and unite employees across the world.

Results:

Giving is Good created a vision that focused on a cause heartland of social justice, that was able to deliver differentiation, a relevant and critical g-local social issue area and also be an expression of the DNA of the brand and values of Dr. Martens.

The grants strategy adopted a rigorous selection process and a depth (global flagship strategic grants) and a breadth (grass roots grants - put forward by employees) approach. This has maximised both social impact and employee engagement.

Case study - TJX (TK Maxx)

Background:

The Fashion Retail market has come under increasing pressure from stakeholders to act responsibly. TJX has always been a company to act with integrity. They recognised there was a real opportunity to ‘punch above their weight’ and create an innovative cause marketing strategy and programme in the retail marketplace.

Brief:

TJX has employed Giving is Good on several occasions over the past 10 years. Working in partnership, we have created cause marketing strategies and initiatives that look at ways TJX can find innovative ways to ensure they deliver business return. At the same time, these deliver positive social impact in the communities where they operate.

Results:

  • Building TJX brand reputation by +36%

  • High profile and award-winning Flagship cause marketing initiatives with Cancer Research UK and Comic Relief that have gone on to raise in excess of £70m

Great Ormond Street Hospital’s award-winning fundraising team has seen significant results over recent years but with a new major capital appeal about to be launched GOSH wanted to maximise the opportunity from philanthropy.

Brief:

Giving is Good was appointed in 2021 to create a new philanthropy strategy to ensure that there could be a step change in income to meet the scale of the ambitions of the charity over the next 10 years.

Results:

The recommendations outlined in the new strategy have seen the creation of a new structure, new innovative products and refined processes have been put in place. The new strategy is already delivering substantial returns and the private phase of the capital appeal is on target.

Founder Paul Gillespie and his team of associate consultants have built a reputation as market leaders in supporting Corporates, NGOs and Ultra High Net Worth Individuals to create positive societal impact.

Over the past 20 years they have advised the Boards of many of the largest companies in the world on cause marketing, community investment and have also worked with a host of leading global NGOs on philanthropy Fundraising.

Paul Gillespie initially worked in the corporate world with Procter and Gamble, which was followed by inspiring the public to give to the world’s most successful fundraising campaign at Comic Relief. More than 20 years ago he created Giving is Good and not only has he worked with the Boards of some of the largest companies in the world but he has also worked with leading philanthropists such as Bill Gates and Elton John. He is passionate about creating a world that is more giving. We all know that…..giving is good.
